Of all of Europe’s most spectacular palaces, there’s nothing quite like Château de Versailles. Its scale, craftsmanship, and grandeur influenced the palaces that followed, and it continuing to inspire to this day. The day before I photographed an elopement at Airelles: Le Grand Contrôle, I toured the interiors and gardens of Chateau de Versailles. With easy access via train from central Paris, it’s a day trip not to missed on your next trip to the French capital.
The story of Versailles began back in the 16th century. Originally built as a hunting lodge, it eventually became the royal residence, playing home to Louis XVI and Marie Antionette before their death in 1793. Since the 19th century, the palace has been open to the public—its architecture, interiors, and art available for all to enjoy. With 60,000 works of art covering five centuries of French history and over 2,000 rooms designed to perfection, it’s an art-enthusiasts dream to explore.
